A recent study suggests that people who come off new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a prominent health publication shows that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"People buying such treatments need to be cognizant of the danger of rapid weight regain when the treatment concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.
Comparing Treatments
The study, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally see a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Understanding the Fast Regain
Doctors believe the way of the drugs accounts for the amplified regain.
The injections imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."
A Chronic Condition?
The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be ongoing.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Testimonies
Users who have discontinued the medication explain a sudden return of hunger.
"I experienced a trigger activating and you're instantly ravenous," described one woman.
This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not established permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Growing Use
Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.
- Use is greater among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
In conclusion, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits relies on combined lifestyle management.
