RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a joint strike targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The site, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was situated in hills just above the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a series of entry passages leading to the facility... preliminary assessments are that the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - referred to as ISIS - enforced militant control over parts of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation shows British leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with allied nations, to stamp out any re-emergence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

RAF aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of the group after its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank every member of the UK armed forces involved in this strike for their expertise and their valour," Healey commented. "They were part of a great many UK service members stationed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to eliminate militants who endanger our way of life, highlights how UK forces are ready to step up, all year round, keeping Britain secure within its borders and influential overseas."

In December, the United States armed forces conducted what it termed a "large-scale strike" against IS targets in Syria, after an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. says Islamic State still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
