Roughly fifty vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.
Cars, building surfaces and postal boxes were vandalized, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they reported in a official communication.
Law enforcement state they were notified late on Wednesday evening, when a man noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored substance.
The fluid had been placed in the form of a swastika, they stated.
Officers then found many other smeared cars and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation prohibiting the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.
Law enforcement say early analysis suggest the substance was most likely blood from a person.
"Currently there is no clue as to where it came from; officials are presently not cognizant of any injuries in relation with the incident," they added.
Municipal representatives stated they were trying "to resolve the mystery" and have requested to the community for details.
A senior political figure stated the incident left him without words and required to be addressed promptly.
"This act strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the extremist terrorist attack half a decade ago," he wrote on online, recalling the murder of nine people by a gunman aiming at people of migrant background in February 2020.
