Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chair of selectors the selector has stated that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

There were concerns that Cummins might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest kicking off on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of participating.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and various factors at play, aside from the physical problem, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a significant role. Ideally from the opening match. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Injury History

The captain missed the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand recently after scans revealed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from several home seasons in a short span.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the contest.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the first Test as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs anyway. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we opted to take a cautious route."
